For years friends have been telling me to read Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, and for years I have left it quietly in the middle of my things I’d like to read list.  To be honest, the idea of reading about the harsh realities of the Vietnam War left me a little apprehensive – an apprehension that turned out to be a complete waste of energy.

I understand now why this book elicits the quiet admiration that comes from anyone who recommends it.  All one can say when they finish is “Everyone should read this book.”
